The Ohio Challengers play musical chairs

On May 18^th the Ohio Challengers held their fifth meeting of the year in the Elementary Music Room at Crestview. The new business that Mrs. Wortman brought up was 4-H camp, by what date you need to own your livestock, June 1^st, BBQ tickets and the Chicken BBQ, and if any of the members had and questions on their projects.

Demonstrations were given by Chelsea Hancock on lounging apparel, Sydney Hudson on parts of a rabbit, and Noah Daugherty on the amount of water content in food. The recreation was musical chairs, music provided by Chelsea Hancock on the piano.

Ohio Challengers Hold First 4-H Meeting for 2011

With 43 members and 2 advisors, the Ohio Challenger’s 4-H club held their first meeting. They chose officers, President, Jacob Wortman, Vice President, Catlin Hancock, Secretary, Chelsea Hancock, Reporter, Sarah Klinger, Treasurer, Daniel Joseph, and Recreation, Derek Biro and Chase Clark. The next meeting is on March 16th and quality assurance will be on April 3rd or April 14th.

Clever Clovers Hold Wee Care Meeting

Clever Clovers 4-H group met on June 21, 2010. Members met at Calvary Evangelical Church at the earlier time of 3:00p.m. Molly Gamble called the meeting to order. Pledges were led by Marie Markward. The roll call sheet was passed while Molly read last meetings minutes. Calendars were led by Marie Markward. Daniel Thompson then talked about Black Inc. Christine Erret adjourned the meeting and Haley Richardson seconded the motion. Snacks were served by Jasmine Defore and Hannah Bartley. Clever Clovers’ next meeting will be held at Calvary Evangelical Church on July 6, 2010. Members are asked to meet at 3:00p.m. After the meeting, Clever Clovers headed over to Wee Care Day Care for a service project. Members were asked to clean cots and pull grass around the fence. Clever Clovers would like to thank Wee Care for providing this opportunity.

Bunny Hoppers 4-H Club Hold Rabbit Judging Contest

Bunny Hoppers 4-H Club held a rabbit judging contest on June 10^th at the Extension Office. There were six breeds of rabbits, with three of each breed. Members had to place three rabbits in order of how the rabbits conformed to the breed. Prizes were given to the members who placed the rabbits most correctly.

It was reported that the Spring Rabbit show was a success. Members were thanked for helping with the show and for showing their rabbits. Members were reminded that livestock judging this year is on July 26^th at the Van Wert County Extension Office. Miscellaneous, foods and clothing with be judged on July 20^th at Delphos Jefferson High School. Make-up judging is on July 15^th for those who will be unable to attend regular judging days.

The next Bunny Hoppers meeting will be on Monday, June 21^st at 6:30pm at the Extension Office. The club officers are planning a fun and educational meeting. Hope to see everyone there!

Ohio Challengers 4-H Club Meeting

Ohio Challengers 4-H Club members have been busy giving demonstrations and doing a community service project after each meeting. The service project includes picking up trash in Edgewood Park, where the summer club meetings are held. An excellent group of officers have been conducting the business and fun during the club meetings.

At the June 7^th meeting, the following members gave a demonstration, a yearly requirement for all members. This includes: Jacob Wortman- gun safety; Karlee Trammell – cooking;  Joey Overmyer – evaluation of a rabbit; Sammi Overmyer – child development; Ian Zollars – Woodburning; Noah Daugherty – computers; Brandon Hudson – anatomy of a rabbit; and Paige Motycka – barrel racing with a horse.

Members were reminded about working at the Chicken barbeque on June 8^th. They were also told to begin working in their 4-H project books as judging is only a month away. The next meeting with be on Tuesday June 22^nd, at 1:00pm at Edgewood Park in Convoy.

Ohio Challengers sign the 4-H Picture

Mrs. Hancock called the meeting to order. Justin Gibson led the Pledge of Alliegance and Gene Gillespie led the 4-H pledge. Catlin called roll with topic of favorite book, it was answered by 52 members, 3 advisors, and 1 guest. Daniel Joseph gave the treasurers report and Chelsea Hancock gave her demonstration on scrapbooking.

Mrs. Wortman talked about project books, camp scholarships, and the Chicken BBQ. Heather Gottke had everyone sign the “In the Shape of 4-H” picture and also talked about camp, tagging, the fairbook, and answered any questions. Mrs. Wortman talked about the next meeting and the newspaper. Daniel Joseph called for demonstrations; the demonstrations were given by the following on the following topics: Claire Mefferd-Stretches, Sarah Klinger-Dairy (Cheese), Casey Gibson-Fishing reels, and Kaitlin Haffeldt-Scrapbooking imprints. Recreation was Simon Says. The next meeting is June 7th at Edgewood Park community building at 1 p.m. Demonstrations to be given are Sammi Overmeyer, Jacob Wortman, Ian Zollars, John Butora, Joey Overmeyer, Danica Hicks, Justin Gibson, and anyone else who missed their day or wants to make it for your camp scholarship points. Next meetings refreshments will be provided by Kaitlin Haffeldt, Ian Zollars, and John Butora. The meeting was adjourned by Mrs. Wortman for snacks and refreshments.

Ohio Challengers have Recreational Fun!

“In the Shape of 4-H,” on Sunday at 6:30, at the fairgrounds the extension office is taking a picture of all the 4-H’ers who want to come.  BBQ tickets have gone out, the annual 4-H chicken BBQ will be held June 8^th at the fairgrounds, but the unsold tickets and the money collected is due May 26^th to Mrs. Wortman. The extension office announced that they are trying to raise money for a new 4-H shaved ice machine and are selling Little Ceasars Pizza its & Success Seeds, which the money, tally sheet and order forms, are due by May 3, 2010. No Later Please. 4-H camp is July 9-13 and judging is July 20 and July 26, alternate judging is July 15.

At the meeting there were 3 advisors and 53 members. Catlin Hancock, the secretary called the meeting to order. Dylan Hicks led the pledge to the American Flag and Chelsea Hancock led the 4-H Pledge. Catlin led roll call, topic of favorite vacation and Daniel Joseph gave his treasurers report. Mrs. Wortman talked about the green club programs, project books, pictures and 4-H newspaper articles, the 4-H banquet, turkeys, quality assurance, and the spring rabbit show.

The demonstrations of the meeting were as follows: Taylor Hughes-Adventures in home living, Rachel Hall- making a quesadilla and the food pyramid, Morgan Klinger- basic disqualifications and faults of a rabbit, Layken Klinger- Popcorn trail mix, and Justin Overmeyer – English Lops. Demonstrations for next week are: Sarah Klinger, Chelsea Hancock, Clare Mefferd, Casey Gibson, Noah Daughtery, and Katlin Hallfeldy. Refreshments for next week are: the Hicks family and the Mefford family. The Recreation team led scoot your buns and Mrs. Wortman adjourned the meeting for snacks and refreshments. The next Ohio Challengers meeting is May 26^th, 2010.

Clever Clovers Hold Last May Meeting

Clever Clovers 4-H group met on May 24, 2010. The meeting was held at 6:30p.m. at Calvary Evangelical Church. Lauren Taylor brought the meeting to order and Caleb Markward led the 4-H pledge.

Claire Gamble took roll call by having members tell who their favorite athlete is. Claire followed roll call with the reading of last meetings minutes. Molly Gamble then gave the treasurer’s report.

Kiley Wortman gave an update on service projects. Members were reminded of the upcoming service projects and thanked for their participation in the previous events. Health & Safety was provided by Daniel Thompson and Caleb Markward. They talked about the causes of, and how to relieve, stress. Members were given stress relieving balls for correct answers to questions.

Calendars were led by Katey Gamble. There are many deadlines for camp forms coming up. If you want to go to 4-H camp, keep track of these dates. Lauren Taylor gave some imformation on Judging. Even more details will be given at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned by Jasmine Defore with Nathan Robenalt seconding the motion. Snacks were provided by Kiley Wortman, Haley & Erin Richardson, and Hannah Bartley. Recreation was provided by Nathan Robenalt and Bradley Line. Members enjoyed a game of Sharks and Minnows.

Clever Clovers will hold their next meeting on June 7, 2010. This meeting will be held at 6:30p.m. at Calvary Evangelical Church.

Ohio Spot Breeders 2010 Donor Gilt Program

The Ohio Spot Breeders, in order to promote the advancement of the breed, will give to 4-H or FFA members a Spotted gilt. Recipients of donor gilts must show the gilt at the 2010 Ohio State Fair in the donor-gilt class and in the Junior Spot Show. Recipients must also breed the gilt to a registered Spot boar for the first breeding and farrow at least one litter of purebred spots; this litter is to be registered with the National Spotted Swine Record.

The Ohio Spot Breeders will try to assist any of the recipients with breeding, either by providing semen or breeding service when possible. If the student does not fulfill the contract, he will pay the donor $150. In order to show at the Ohio State Fair in the Jr. swine breeding shows, all youth must carry the swine breeding 4-H project (project # 140) in their county 4-H club regardless if the county has a Breeding Swine Project at their fair. To qualify for a donor gilt, an applicant must be in 4-H or FFA and submit an essay on the topic “Why I want to own a Spot Gilt.” Essay must describe the facility that the gilt will be raised in and the area where you plan to farrow the pigs. Please include pictures of your facilities. Essay should also give history of 4-H or FFA activities and accomplishments and any other extra curricular activities (school, church, social, etc.) All essays must be received by April 2, 2010. Essays will be judged and the donor or a representative from the Ohio Spot Breeders will contact each possible winner.

Final winners will be notified by May 1 and all gilts must be picked up by May 15. (It will be the responsibility of the student to pick the gilt up at the donor’s farm.) Donor gilts will be eligible to show in the donor-gilt class and the junior show as well the open spot show at The Ohio State Fair. Appropriate Ohio State Fair entries, [http://ohiostatefair.com/osf/osf3.htm] must be made by Donor Gilt award winner in order to show at the Ohio State Fair. Entries are due June 20th. Any offspring will be eligible to show in the donor-gilt class next year and all other related spot shows at the Ohio State Fair. Recipients will receive a free membership to the Ohio Spot Breeders and the National Spotted Swine Record (junior membership.) This essay must be signed by the STUDENT, PARENT AND ADVISOR.
